Overview:

Plaque with wall fitting & chrome stand

In an attempt to boost the sales of the Northern Edition of the Daily Mirror, Hartlepool born cartoonist Reg Smythe was asked to invent a new character with a specific appeal to the readers of that region. The result was Andy Capp, a work-shy womaniser, who in between playing football and pigeon racing, spent most of his time lying on the couch or down the pub.

Supposedly based on Smythe's dad, Andy Capp first graced the pages of the Daily Mirror on August 5, 1957. In a play on words, Andy Capp is indeed a "handicap" to his long-suffering wife Flo.
